Hashtags on Instagram: How To Choose The Right Ones

When used in the right way, Instagram hashtags are a powerful tool to be discovered by new users. Here’s how to choose them.

Inserting as many hashtags as possible on Instagram randomly and without a precise strategy is not the winning recipe for making your posts on the social network visible and viral. Choosing the right hashtags, on the other hand, allows you to be discovered more easily by new users and increase the number of your followers. Let’s see now how to do it.

What are hashtags, and what are they for

Let’s start from the base, that is, from the meaning of hashtags: these are labels or tags used as thematic aggregators on Instagram and other social meida (such as Twitter), whose function is to make it easier for users to find messages on a specific theme. Graphically, these labels are identified with a hash sign preceding the word chosen as a tag.

Instagram offers the possibility to follow certain hashtags in order to allow users to always stay up to date on the topics of their interest.

How many hashtags to use on Instagram

Instagram allows you to enter a maximum of 30 hashtags for every single post inserted in the feed, whether it is a photo or video. This, however, as we have already highlighted, does not mean that every post on Instagram, to be really effective, must always contain 30 hashtags. On the contrary, the labels to be associated with your posts should be chosen wisely, limiting yourself to inserting the most relevant and potentially most effective ones at that particular moment on the social network.

How to choose Instagram hashtags

To achieve the goal of making your posts visible to users who are interested in certain content and obtaining maximum virality, it is not enough to use the trending hashtags or the most popular hashtags on Instagram at the time of publication of the post.

These labels, in fact, are so widely used that the chances of emerging from the crowd are very remote. Often, then, many accounts use the notoriously popular hashtags on Instagram in posts whose content has no connection with them, prompting the search engine to consider those tags as spam and penalizing the posts that contain them.

For a more effective result, therefore, it may be appropriate to focus on more niche hashtags, which, however, as more specific and less common, can turn out to be better hashtags on Instagram than the most trending ones. Finding a balance between “big” and “small” hashtags is the most suitable solution and is obtained by carrying out a careful analysis of the hashtags at a general and specific level.

Generally, the hashtags to use on Instagram are identified based on what other users have already posted on the platform. However, the possibility of creating hashtags from scratch to promote your brand or a single initiative should not be underestimated. Doing it within a wide-ranging strategy previously studied ad hoc increases the chances of success.
